Papers : of Robert Baker Pegram, 1830-1864.

The collection contains papers and documents including Pegram's commission as Commander in the Virginia Navy, 2 May 1861, and other appointment papers; and sixty-five letters including a letter, 1862, from Liverpool concerning maritime strategy outlining a plan for the Nashville to escape from the Tuscarora; letter, 1858, to Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott from Pegram's son John hoping for an appointment in the U.S. Army; and a letter, 1864, to Pegram on the death of his son John in the Civil War. Also, includes military orders; list of officers engaged in the Mexican service; report on a visit to Ningpo, China, 20 July 1854; printed materials relating to Japan; and a 26 February 1855 printed speech by J. Morton on the bill to promote the efficiency of the navy.

Pegram, of Dinwiddie County, Va., spent his career in the military first in the U.S. Navy, then the Confederate Navy where he helped organize the Virginia Volunteer Navy and commanded the Nashville (cruiser) and the Richmond (ironclad).
